remarks: As only William Chowe`s examination survives from this suit, not clear who is suing whom; as he appears to deny the validity of the contract, assumed here that Ellen Mortemer is the plaintiff trying to enforce a contract.
1492-10-17: William Chowe, Response of Defendant
Admits to having made a contract on 24 June 1488 or 1489 with Ellen Mortemer, with her father`s agreement also, conditional on her being free to marry and particularly that she had not previous contracted with Robert Bancroft. The witness also requested that it be recorded that after that contract (although he cannot specify exactly when), Mortemer admitted “in the presence of many trustworthy men” that on 6 January 1488 she had contracted marriage with Bancroft and intended to marry him.
